Formally incorporated in 1923, the Village of North Riverside's roots date back to just after the Civil War. Then, its first residents were comprised of onion farmers and members of the Riverside Holiness Association. It was also home to the legendary Melody Mill ballroom of the Big Band era.
Today, our community of 6,688 residents is made up of active senior citizens and young families who enjoy the many benefits and quality of life in North Riverside. Such benefits include senior clubs, a quilting club, a thriving theater group, scouting and sports programs, as well as a state-of-the-art ball field complete with a sophisticated tornado and lightning alert system.
North Riverside's Village Commons, the hub of all Village Departments, administrative offices and recreational events, ranks among the most beautifully executed green spaces in the western suburbs. The Commons features a pond and fountain, walking path, picnic areas, tot play area and its most-recent centerpiece - a gazebo dedicated to courageous men and women of the American Armed Forces.
ABOUT THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Historical Society meets monthly to assemble and catalog the wide array of items that paint a picture of our town as it has grown over the years. We welcome interested residents to come and share their mementos and browse our collection.
We strongly encourage anyone with photos, stories or other items of historical significance to come and share them with us as we build our collection and prepare it to be shared with the world!
This is a wonderful Village endeavor that we all will be proud to view and show to visitors who come to North Riverside! The North Riverside Library has be extremely helpful in the fact that space was donated to display collections and artifacts. We are still in the process of of cataloging and labeling items in our collections, for which, we still need help with.
A rotating sample of our collection will be on display in the North Riverside Library for all to enjoy. Join us to share stories and memories, photos, newspaper clippings of North Riverside, as you remember it! Help us to build a time capsule to pass on to the next generation of residents and share the pride!
