Building Permits
A permit shall be obtained prior to the erection, construction, alteration or repair, demolition or movement of any building or structure in the Village of North Riverside.
A permit is also required for the following:
- Alterations involving moving or adding walls
- Demolition
- Electrical and plumbing work
- Fire suppression and detection work
- Solar Panels
- HVAC work
- Sheds, fences, decks, roofs, concrete, asphalt, window replacement, siding, gutters, patios
- Parking lots, private walks and driveways
- Pools, hot tubs, spas
- Exterior wall mounted signs and temporary signs
PERMIT SUBMITTAL PROCESS
Most permit applications can be submitted via email to: michellec@northriverside-il.org. Staff will review the paperwork and contact you if additional items are required. Permits can also be submitted in person or by mail to the Village address.
Please don’t wait till the last minute to apply for a permit. Permit applications could take anywhere from seven to ten workings days to be processed depending on the type of work being done
CONSTRUCTION PLANS
All construction plans must comply with local zoning ordinances pertaining to building use, height, area and setbacks.
REMOTE PAYMENT OPTIONS
Payments may be mailed or left in the drop box located in the front and rear of the Village Commons. The Community Development Department will also continue to process payments for contractor registration and permit fees over the phone at 708-762-5922.
CONSTRUCTION HOURS
Monday through Friday – 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Saturday – 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Sunday – 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Construction projects can be stressful, not only to homeowners but for neighbors as well. In order to reduce the stress and number of complaints, please be considerate of your neighbors and limit noisy activities during early morning and late evening hours. Any construction debris or refuse must be cleaned on a daily basis from construction site and adjacent properties. Please be aware of your property lines and make sure all construction and equipment storage are located on owner’s property.
DUMPSTERS
A permit is not required for a dumpster, but contractor or homeowner must notify the Community Development Department in advance of drop of date. Contractor/Homeowner must provide staff with the name, address, contact number and length of time dumpster will be on site. If the property has a driveway, the dumpster must be located on private property. For houses that do not have a driveway, the dumpster can be located on the street directly in front of the property for a period no longer than two weeks and must have ¾” plywood underneath the dumpster and flashing barricades on the outside corners.
PORTABLE & CHEMICAL TOLIETS
If possible, portable toilets must be located in the rear yard at least 5 feet from property lines.
