[ARCHIVED] Summer Maintenance Checklist

Green Lawn Care

Cutting Lawn:

Section 302.4 of the 2009 International Property Maintenance Code:

All premises and exterior property and the parkway adjacent to said parcel of property shall be maintained free from weeds or plant growth in excess of six inches (6”). All noxious weeds shall be prohibited. Weeds shall be defined as all grasses, annual plants and vegetation, other than trees or shrubs provided; however, this term shall not include cultivated flowers and gardens.

Trim trees and bushes:

Section 12.20.030.A of the North Riverside Municipal Code:

Any tree or shrub which overhangs any sidewalk, street, or other public place in the village in such a way as to impede or interfere with traffic or travel on such public place shall be trimmed by the owner of the abutting premises on which such tree or shrub grows so that the obstruction shall cease.

Agitators to birdfeeders:

Cook County Department of Public Health:

The best means of controlling mosquitoes is to deny them a place to develop. This is source reduction, the elimination of water from places where mosquitos lay eggs. Each of us has an obligation to make sure our properties are free of mosquito-breeding sites, such as stagnant ponds, poorly maintained swimming pools, tree holes, bird baths, buckets or other debris in which water accumulates.

Clean under bird feeders;

Section 8.79.010 of the North Riverside Municipal Code:

Prohibition. It shall be unlawful for any person or property owner to feed or allow the feeding of wildlife by placing or leaving any food, feed or seed at the exterior of any public or private property, with the exception of the use of elevated bird feeders. Elevated bird feeders are allowed for use as long as all food, feed or seed is placed in a feeder designed for the specific purpose of feeding birds. Any accumulation of food, feed or seed spilled onto the ground or surfaces from elevated bird feeders shall be removed by the person or property owner to prevent an attractant to wildlife.

Garbage inside containers:

Section 308.1 of the 2009 International Property Maintenance Code:

Accumulation of rubbish or garbage. All exterior property and premises, and the interior of every structure, shall be free from any accumulation of rubbish or garbage.

Section 8.16.090.C of the North Riverside Municipal Code:

Containers for the storage of refuse or garbage shall be kept covered at all times.

Clean gutters:

Section 304.7 of the 2009 International Property Maintenance Code:

Roofs and drainage. The roof and flashing shall be sound, tight and not have defects that admit rain. Roof drainage shall be adequate to prevent dampness or deterioration in the walls or interior portion of the structure. Roof drains, gutters and downspouts shall be maintained in good repair and free from obstructions. Roof water shall not be discharged in a manner that creates a public nuisance.
